This release is a gamble, for anyone considering paying the flipper prices be aware that the inner sleeves for this release are liable to cause scuffs and scratches on the records. 3 out of 6 LPs in my set were affected and repeated clicking essentially ruins the music on those songs. I think rhino needs to be more able and offer replacement discs for RSD items like this. I have no clue if they do or not but I just emailed them requesting info on that and whether or not I can get replacement discs if I show proof of purchase. I’ll update this comment if/when I hear back from them. It’s a shame as the show and sound on the release otherwise are both top notch.

Edited 3 years agoI agree on the paper liners “wrong” as far as the vinyl set goes excellent sound and pressing imo can’t go wrong with picking this up if you can find it !

I often buy a box set like this and listen through it all once, then it stays on the shelf and maybe only gets played a couple of times a year. They will often stay on the shelf because I'll prioritise listening to the AP/Mofi etc. pressings from the artist in question. But with this, I haven't stopped playing it since I got it back in June of last year. You can tell it was recorded well, and it just sounds great overall. I probably don't really even need to comment on the music at all as it's the Dead in 1972.
I think I was lucky in regard to the sleeves scuffing and leaving debris as I only saw one little bit of white stuff on one of the sides. Either way, I ran them all through an ultrasonic, and they're all right as rain. -
Such a nice recording. The vinyl sounds just incredible. I immediately put the discs into protective sleeves though.

It beggars belief that an expensive box set like this has the records packed in harsh card inner sleeves?? The people who make these decisions are absolute morons and have no appreciation or understanding of the damage these abominable sleeves cause to delicate vinyl surfaces. I hear some noise on track 3 Side 1 of my set and a loud pop, even after wet and ultrasonic cleaning. I am working my way through them and Sides 2, 3 and 4 have been fine. It's all very well putting the records into MoFi or polylined inner sleeves after purchase, but the damage has already been done at the factory when the records were placed in these card inner sleeves. I haven't looked at my records closely (I'd get depressed, probably!) but it wouldn't surprise me if any noise issues I heard and may hear are due to the packaging. They would pack them in sandpaper lined sleeves if they could. And it's not always the label that is to blame either. More often than not, it's the artist or the people around the artist who dictate that this type of packaging is used. It would never happen in Japan!!!

Occasional non-fill, but nothing super distracting. Agreed that while the printed sleeves are nice, whoever put the records into them should have taken a bit more care. Lots of noisy squiggles and hairlines. A good release and ultimately nothing that detracts from the listening experience, just the usual anal retentive quality control stuff. MoFi inners do fit very comfortably into the printed sleeves.

Anyone else have a damaged box? The discs themselves are perfect, but my box is damaged, and of course it was the only copy available at my local shop on rsd. I'm going to see if Rhino can send out a replacement.

See lost of complaints about the inner sleeves but I found that MOFI Master sleeves fit perfectly into these and stay in place once inserted turning the sleeve into a poly lined. The added MOFI inners don't add enough extra thickness to prevent all the records to comfortably fit nicely in the box still. Personally I think the thicker sleeves with photos are an their previous full show releases. They are a nice cardboard vs. paper and I had zero scuffs. Enjoy the show :-}
