Edited 7 months agoNot sure what the point of the remix is, the original mix sounds much better; more guitar texture and life. The drums are also superior on the original mix. The remix is dull. The only bright spot on the remix is that the vocals are more forward and isolated. Good pressing quality and decent fidelity considering this was never even in the ballpark of being considered an audiophile recording, and will always remain as such. The jacket is rather cheaply made, but this is a worthwhile addition to the collection.

Great remaster! I really enjoy the remix too. This was my first REM album, when I got a CD back in 1994. I purchased a copy of the 1994 vinyl pressing back in 2005 or so;

Compared to the original, this one holds its own, but the original does edge it out ever so slightly. That said, the difference is ever so slight that it would be dumb to spend any extra on a NM original. I would be perfectly happy with this one, plus you get a fun alternate version! -
I'm with the others who enjoy the original, it's just perfect, perhaps partly because I grew up with this version I'm biased, but!, the original had the vibe to it. The remix takes away the swagger, i appreciate that Scott Litt thought he could do better, but I don't get the 2nd guessing of this album, I'm in agreement the remix sounds more like a demo.
In many of the key songs I really missed the psychedelic tremolo guitars, these really helped make the songs what greatness they were. The remix sucks the life out rather than breathe any new life into in my opinion.

They did a great job on the remaster, the remix isn't bad, but for those who were listening to these songs from release date you may not like it as much. Yes, they definitely pushed Stipes vocals forward. My copies were perfectly quiet in all aspects, although there were some paper sleeve scuffs on the remix album. Overall I'm enjoying it, if your a purist, pick up the single album remaster ;)
