Edited 2 years agoOk, kinda baffled how everyone thinks the review section on Discogs is just for audio fidelity rather than actual musical content. It makes me a bit nervous for the future of art. The average viewer/listener in 2023 seems far more interested in clarity of aesthetic and cleanness of the medium itself (*cough* "Midsommar" fans *cough*) rather than the actual substance of the art. Just noting this for anyone who actually cares. Posterity, perhaps.
...Moving on:
"This Is Why" is an amazing album. I wasn't a particularly big Paramore fan until now. Like, right now. This album, lyrically, feels like it's monitoring your pulse THE ENTIRE TIME you listen. The songs are thematically so effortlessly "2023" in their angsty, paranoid, turmoil-heavy mood, and the articulation of what we, as individuals, are all feeling (it's maybe a bit akin to how the sketch comedy show "I Think You Should Leave" does similar work in absolutely nailing the zeitgeist). Yet the lyrics here would still mean just as much if transposed to 1983 or (one would assume?) 2063. The music is like a perfect mix of slick and raw, polished and aggressively abrasive. It somehow manages to out-Killer Duran Duran works almost as well). Danceable, angular, attacking, but sensuously persuading persuading persuading you. I keep hearing new things in it—and I'm fairly sure I'm missing the correct referents Hayley and the boys are drawing from, but my limited attempt still serves to describe, if nothing else, the level of artistry at work here. This is the sound of someone absolutely at their top altitude, top speed, of confident self-expression in the best form it can find. Amazing album.
QUICK EDIT: Apparently the number one musical reference they were using as guidance on this album is Bloc Party. This makes SO MUCH SENSE. -
