Listening on a tech 12 mk-II with a Shure m97xe through a Marantz and B&W loudspeakers, this reissue is nothing short of fantastic. If you're having complaints about the sound, perhaps it is time to upgrade your setup?

Yep Roc could have done better...classic album, great material, but this 2LP reissue is lacking the liner notes from the CD version, personnel credits...heck, it doesn't even have songwriting credits! Come on, guys...

Edited 12 years agoThis release brought in me such joyful feeling as indeed Nick Lowe is such a graciously cool musician and facetious songwriter understanding that rock shouldn't become tedious, pop must have wit and new-wave sounds better pristine and sharp.
In the 90's Nick Lowe itted that his greatest fear was "sticking with what you did when you were famous" so maybe it's worth even looking further than his amazing early releases.
The guy has wit obviously, a quality lacking in much of contemporary 'pop' music, considering that this album was relatively mainstream music by the end of the 1970's as it reached #22 in UK Music Week and #127 in US Billboard Album Charts by April 1978. These were the days when you would love your label or spit burn their desk and leave.
What the release notes tell is true, nearly all the tracks found on the second vinyl were previously unavailable in such album format and can only be found today on old vinyl compilations, singles or 7" b-sides ('Shake That Rat', 'I Love My Label', 'They Called it Rock', 'Born a Woman', 'Endless Sleep', 'Heart Of The City'...), the good thing is all these tunes date from the same period 'Jesus Of Cool' in the UK and simultaneously 'Pure Pop For Now People' in the US were released, so the overall feeling for this double LP is emotionally concordant.
A very finely done reissue, great mastering, heavy-grade vinyls, nealry identical design and photography for (gatefold) cover and inner sleeves, in other words: Topnotch. Nick could sing 'I love my Yep Roc Records label' and the Original Version of 'Cruel To Be Kind' is even included for in the right measure!
