This is by far and away the best version of this great great record.
The bass guitar sounds unbelievable mighty.
It doesn’t matter if it is expensive or not.
If you only want to have a single super sounding mono record, this is the one! -
Edited 2 years agoComparing this to the UK 1st mono and stereo, I think the MoFi wins out… Just.
Generally, the vocals are well handled - front, centre, and natural. And the harmonica is tamed (that sharp brightness of some recent represses is gone). Dear Landlord is resplendent - the piano is really well handled.
My main criticism relates to the bass. Generally. it’s fine - on Drifter’s Escape, it is rich and realistic. However, on Frankie Lee (on my system) - it pronounced to a degree which is wacky. On Lonesome Hobo, it’s distracting and a little irritating (it’s boosted to the point whereby the clatter of the strings against the frets clicks above the rest of the track.
Over all - glad to have it. But it’s not perfect and it’s not night and day better than other options. It’s strengths are balanced out by it’s weaknesses. -

This is a bargain, for some reason people sleep on this album, one of Dylan's best and most forward thinking albums, at the height of flower power and sprawling psych albums, Dylan goes lo-fi Americana. This is THE BEST SOUNDING VERSION OF THIS RECORD. All the MOFI Dylans are the best sounding versions of those records, but for some reason this one is still reasonably priced on Discogs. Won't be forever, buy them while you can for near retail price. Not trying to be a shill for MOFI here, just trying to make a pitch for those who want great sounding music at a still reasonable price.

Music Direct is now asking $75.00 for this one! It’s now officially OOP...If you want them at retail price go now!!!

Edited 4 years agoOut of all the Dylan mono mixes to still be available, I am very surprised that this is one of them. Probably the hardest to find an OG copy of because it was the last dedicated mono mix. This issue sounds amazing, the bass is fantastic on it and I feel that this one works better in mono. It’s a little more stripped down than a lot of the tracks on the previous two releases from Dylan and I find that mono really suits Dylan when he’s doing more intimate material. This, along with the other mono cuts MoFi did, should be on any Dylan fans list of must haves. The day will come when these go for hundreds.
-
Yes, the bass is up, but feats great with the mix. I have to compare it with the Columbia/Legacy Mono box.
-
Great sound but I find the bass a bit too up front in the mix. Bob’s voice is great though (as always).
