For me, as with many 4ad artists, the first album is the best. Same with this first, self-titled, "Throwing Muses" album. It's a stunning debut album. Each track is a heartfelt gem.
Raw and abrasive in parts, it can turn a corner and have a moment of unexpected, weird beauty; the ups and downs are pure Kristin Hersh: her state of mind, honesty, ion, bits of anger and gentleness (obviously ed by an amazing band). It all came out perfectly in this first album and is an absolute genius of a classic.
[They continue to create beautiful music. I was just currently listening to Purgatory - some amazing guitar! It prompted me to go back to this beginning.] -
Such a great debut album! Easily to get sucked into this I really think Throwing Muses is unfairly underrated and deserves WAY more credit than they get. I'm glad they're still making music, albeit minus Tanya Donelly.

Edited 6 years agoMy original 4AD vinyl copy is missing Leslie Langston off the front sleeve.
Don't know why. Anyone?
