their singles from that album are good but the other songs are okay or boring
JOHN THE REVELATOR sounds like an updated PERSONAL JESUS while PRECIOUS sounds like an updated ENJOY THE SILENCE -
This album is excellent. A nice blend of alternative electronics and rock. To me this Depeche Mode's best album right behind 'Sounds Of The Universe', 'Black Celebration', 'Violator' and 'Some Great Reward'. It could easily be at the top of the list. It will be considered a classic in ten years.
The first single 'Precious' is already a classic. Right up there with other big DM hits like 'Enjoy The Silence', 'People Are People', 'It's No Good' and 'Personal Jesus'.
All the singles off this album are excellent, and should have been huge hits, but DM are one of the most under-rated band out there, despite their many fans.
My favorite track off this album is: 'Nothing's Impossible', followed by 'Suffer Well'.
The whole album is good, and also check out the B-sides to the singles. They were also excellent! -
Edited 18 years agoPlaying The Angel is the best DM album since Songs Of Faith And Devotion. It has a good concept (pain in various tempos or sth. like that), and the songs reflects the whole idea on the album. The opener, "A Pain That I'm Used To", and "Nothing's Impossible" (written by Dave Gahan) are my favourites. The only thing that upsets me in the album is the Martin-vocal track "Macro". Although it's still a good song, it could have been much better; and could have become one of the best DM songs which Martin is on the vocal.
A little note: Martyr (which is the new single for Best Of) was the first recorded track for Playing The Angel, but the album doesn't contains the song: Because DM thinks that Playing The Angel is such a dark album that Martyr is not a good choice to be on the album. I just can't understand that actually, because the 4th single John The Revelator is a fast-paced track either. Anyway, the album is very well and worth buying. 8.5/10.
