    ________

This entry is for a U.S. Capitol release, but it is not a Capitol pressing. I think Capitol stopped pressing records (Winchester, Jacksonville, Los Angeles) by this time. IINM, this entry is shows this pressing is a product of Specialty Records Corporation in New York i.e. SRC. Does your copy’s matrices show the stamp - big S with little R and little C inside the curves? By the 1980s Specialty was arguably THE BEST plant in the U.S. Thin vinyl, usually, but always flat, centered, quiet, and sometimes using the short-lived Quiex translucent vinyl. Perhaps the U.K. record plants were tops for classical records in the 1950s, for rock records in the 1960s, and for 12” dance mix and modern rock e.p.s in the 1980s. But I’m not so sure their collective reputation remained solid into the latter 1990s, so don’t assume the original UK Anthology necessarily bests the US counterparts.

Lastly, disc thickness/weight is hardly a major factor in sound quality. Plant quality control is more important - proper pressing technique and adequate time, handling, vinyl formula, etc. Even more important is mastering credit and mastering source. I see a “Kevin Reeves” cut the U.S. lacquer, while someone uncredited cut the U.K. lacquer, as matrices for the two substantially differ from ea. other. You ought to let your ears determine which is best.

Btw, the 2017 De Agostini (UK/Ireland?) reissues of the Beatles catalog, including the Anthology trilogy, garnered rave reviews. They’re all pricey now, but, budget allowing, you might consider this as another option.

Back in 1996 I was not as educated to the fact that the US pressings were not as good as UK or other Europe. Anyway it's not the end of the world and I will NOT be looking for the UK presses of #2 and #3 (unless they are extra cheap $$$). I will enjoy what I have.
