A compilation/playlist of ORB remixes which has the essence of a DJ mix, aging well. Like a simulation of how LX Paterson would approach a set. The monaural mixdown doesn't take anything away, but instead, actually adds to that experience.
-
Even if this version is mostly in mono, this release is still a great one to pick up for the 74 page booklet, going in depth about the band and their discography.

While I like most of the remixes on this, what sort of stupid studio engineer doesn't realise it's in mono? They must have been so stoned.
Also, a lot of tracks were recorded from vinyl, and not declicked. Really sloppy and unfortunate... -
Edited 20 years agoDefinately not The Orbs strongest release. The funny thing about this compilation (well the version I've got anyway) is that although most of the tracks are in mono one track on the first cd, Higher Than The Sun, is actualy in stereo. I dont know why that is. Personaly I prefer their original work to the remixes anyway.

Edited 20 years agoMy copy (purchased back in 96) was in stereo. At least that's what it sounded like.
This release essentially takes the brunt of the artist remix releases that had been turning up in the "bootleg" Orb releases which started surfacing back in '95. Additionally there is a great booklet with the collected output of the Orb complete with cover work and trainspotter details. This alone makes this release the strongest of the collections.
If you picked up things like the Morphology collection and some of the other quasi-legal Orb releases, this'll be sort of a let down. But if you missed or couldn't afford those and are looking for a good cross section of the Orb's earlier remix efforts, this is a treat.
As should be expected, some of this material hasn't exactly aged well, but as a representation of a time. This is a very potent capsule.
