Ambient music refers to a kind of music that envelops the listener without drawing attention to itself.
The Term was created in 1978 by Brian Eno's AMBIENT 1 "Music for Airports". Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting. — Brian Eno (Music for Airports liner notes, September 1978). As ambient music continues to have successive periods of popularity, the amount of material described in this way is huge. s might wish to consider tags such as Dark Ambient, Drone, New Age, etc, instead of or on conjunction with Ambient, to bring greater clarity to entries.
