Timeless music. I was and am not a music purist far from it I love electronics in my tunes however as they say theres always......an exception and this one hit me like a ton of cherry blossoms falling.
Seriously I picked up a used remastered version of the disc because I like the cover. After hitting the play button I realized a: how personal this music is b: it was recorded in 1965 and you cannot distinguish its antiquity like you can with rock and jazz of that period. The remastering is silent and the handful of instruments ie Scotts clarinet, shakuhachi and koto and perfectly balanced in the mix. Amazing that an American jazz musician would take on such a radical genre bending departure but I must tip the hat to Mr. Scott for take the leap of faith.
The music is serene, thought evoking and conveys a sense of tranquility unlike anything of that decade. This is very sparse music one would call it ambient even but there is a intricate interplay within the context of the compositions drawing on ancient scales and perhaps melodic motif's albeit I am no authority with regards to Japanese folk song. Highly recommend this one!
