Edited 4 years agoWhile I had this and that infamous Plain edition, I'd compared the both and concluded that both are similary not that great pressing. then I've sold Plain and lately I had a chance to clean this with Ultrasonic cleaning machine. the sound became a bit better after that but I was not impressed. then today I gave it Okki Nokki RCM clean several times.
I can say that the material used for this is definitely not the virgin vinyl but the very poor quality vinyl used. hence the color of vinyl is not shiny black, more like an ash color, like a tainted black.
What makes it worse is the paper innersleeve and the tightly sealed packaging. when I opened my sealed copy, records were almost stuck with the innersleeve. guess all the paper scruff and debris.
It certainly affect the play back. surface noises here and there. it's not pop or click. it's a squeaking sounds comes from the poor material.
but the SQ itself is amazing. definitely better SQ than Idler Wheel(original) and it can be knack to knack with Tidal. or maybe even better with a right system.
if you have this, clean it throughly. give this record a chance to breathe and this will shine through your system. -
The original pressing (2005) is profoundly better in sound quality than Plain Recordings' reissue. The 180g reissue has endless pops and crackles in addition to inappropriate surface noise that ruins tracks like "Extraordinary Machine", "Parting Gift", and "Waltz (Better Than Fine)". Furthermore, there is an unforgivable skipping defect just after the climax in "Not About Love"; I returned my copy twice and every replacement copy had the same defect and loud surface noise. Though it may be costly, if anyone is interested in purchasing this album as a 12" LP I only recommend the original issue. The first pressing has beautiful, crisp sounds (with no surface noise) that bring Fiona's piano chords and vocals to life––the fidelity, mastering & dynamic range is very appreciable.
