Reviews

  • everlasting_day's avatar
    everlasting_day
Midway through 1997 – equidistant between the death of a US rapper and that of a UK princess – Bobby Gillespie and his shape-shifting Scots abandoned the acid house avatar and reheated classic rock of albums three and four respectively, steering their lab experiment towards the halls of big beat and trip-hop for LP number five.

At its most obvious level, Vanishing Point finds Primal Scream in thrall to the aureate pop approach adopted by Beck in Odelay; listen deeper and the surrealism of this apparent concept album (named after and based upon a recondite 1971 road movie) suits the soundscape mindset more. The bad days of the mid-to-late 80s, as Primal’s first two albums flopped and Creation were in a perilous financial position, must have seemed a planet away.
