I will respond to my own question below, as I finally went ahead and bought this re-issue of Don McLean - American Pie) is far more open and offers more clarity than this one, and Don's voice is more forward in the mix, offering a much more pleasant and engaging listening experience. To put it differently, the 1974 OG made me tap my feet. This one didn't.
