Definitely playable. Yes background noise is noticeable during quiet age but actually sound pretty good. I’d bet there are lots of noisy original pressings out there that sound a lot worse. A nice playable collectible. Pick it up and you be the judge.

Picture discs always sound worse than a standard record. People should just purchase them as a novelty and not as an every day playing record.

Edited 5 years agoI'm quite literally amazed at some of the comments here.
There's complaints about the sound quality or lack thereof on a picture disc ?
It's 2 pictures printed onto paper.
Then clear vinyl over the top.....like 'a sandwich' ?
It's like pressing a record with the label 'inside'.
It's a very thin clear layer so the picture can be seen properly.
The finished product is meant to look pretty and little more. -
Edited 5 years agoMy mam made me get this record for her as the price has come down now. She really enjoys the music on both sides of the disc, but she is not very keen on the artwork of David Bowie as a giant flying hand. She says it looks like it was made by a man or a lady who was tripping on illegal chemical drugs!!

Edited 9 years agoI got this at a local record store for $45 Canadian on RSD. It was a bit of an impulsive purchase; I regretted buying it minutes after paying for it. I finally put it on today thinking I should at least enjoy it if I can't resell it anyways -- 132 copies on sale at the moment.
First of all, it's a beautiful piece of art. Every line of the text and design element looks crisp and the colours are vibrant. I really love it as a visual object.
I'm mostly fine with the sound quality too. The bass is super heavy as it should be on this album. However, the noise floor seems more noticeable than I would prefer. It's probably because of the nature of the mix having a wide dynamic range and me playing it cranked up. There is a faint "woa-woa-woa" whooshing sound that can be heard between A2 and A3, but it doesn't bother me during the actual tracks. It's a dirty, gritty kind of music anyways...
I wonder what the regular pressing of the reissue sounds like. I do love the reclining Bowie wearing the man dress. Maybe I'll get that too. Probably not.. I'm happy with the purchase. At least I'm telling myself that I am. No buyers remorse. It's Bowie! -
Not sure if there was a second pressing, but I just found a few dozen at Used Kids Records in Columbus, OH.

This one will be right up there with Rock N Roll Suicide from RSD 2014 and Get Behind Me Satan from RSD 15 as one of The Ones That Got Away. At least I got to meet the people that bought them. One of them wanted to trade if I could help him find some other record. Alas, I couldn't find it, so I watched him walk away with it. I could cry...
