This album has had the most effect on me. I was 11 years old, visiting cousins, lying on the floor wrapped up in the music. I've grown up with this album always being there...Best version? I still have the original vinyl from '74 and have always considered it the best (apart from the remastered CDs). Just crank up the volume a bit.

In my opinion, Queen finest album containing their most accomplished, daring and technically proficient work. Almost a concept album in some respects with the `Tolkienesque` theme running through it - especially Side Black. Roy Baker`s recording/production is not great however and the final mixes gave the album a slightly `muddy` sound on some tracks. However this is minimised on the EMI first pressings, and on a top flight vinyl replay system (Linn LP12/Naim/Focal Utopia) the sound is superb. Don`t bother with any of the repressings or foreign imports (including Japan) because they are `pants` compared to a mint/near mint EMI first pressing. My copy is YAX 4735 - 4U 1/O and YAX 4736 - 4U 1/A IT SOUNDS SUPERB!!

My copy came with a large poster featuring a painting by Charles Dadd upon which the lyrics for "The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke" were based. I've never seen another copy with this poster. Does anyone know anything about it? Was it widely available? The odd thing is it was printed by the E J Day Group who regularly produced album sleeves for EMI, but the sleeve for my copy of the LP was printed by Garrod and Lofthouse, EMI's OTHER main supplier of sleeves.

I couldn't find my version on the list: It seems to be a UK original EMI pressing. The A-side label reads "Side White" vertically along the edge of the big EMI logo, but on the B-side it reads "Side Black" horizontally above the track listings and not vertically next to the EMI logo. The album cover is also laminated (possibly by a previous owner).
