Notes
The inserts are very similar to those of the Japanese release, including RIAJ-mandated content near the barcode. However, there is no obi, and the catalog number indicates it is the European edition.
Similar to this other European version SAR (3) on the back cover and disc, the other version doesn't.
This is a mix CD; the CD has 19 track markers but tracks 5, 6, 9 and 19 themselves comprise mixed tracks. Each part of these tracks is indicated by a letter (e.g. 5.1, 5.2). Duration for the complete track is listed at the first part.
Made in Austria.

This is one of the best dj mixes I've ever heard. Seamles, mixing multiple tracks and fantastic, unique selection.

Discovered DJ Krush through a friend's recommendation back around 2001 and this album still deserves a spin in 2020. Lazy and hazy at times, sharp and unnerving at others, but always grooving.

This mix is really dope, very creative. I was afraid it would be stark, clangy and aggressive because of when it came out (2000), and it does have a little of that borderline dark industrial vibe here and there, but overall it's still very much in the same kind of dubby chillout and drum-focused groove as DJ Krush's earlier material on Ninja Tune.

Edited 18 years agoMostly instrumental mix, tiny bit of japanese rap, chilled out hiphop beats, little bit of jazz, very creative. Probably the best place to start, as it is an excellent introduction to DJ Krush's work.

Edited 20 years agoB-b-b-b-back to the Essence indeed! On this sonic excursion Krush offers up a serving of beats and sounds that go way beyond the 'usual' boundaries of hip hop; and then some. The drums and accompanying a cappelas/effects/plunderphonics on this CD sound as though they were created/mangled/recorded in a disused and abandoned gothic cathedral or that carvernous space-ship envisioned by HR Giger in Alien: archaic or otherworldly. Bass is often a key element in this mix be it throbbing, gurgling or thumping; it wraps iteslf around your skull and penetrates every available space in your head. But if bass is one end of the spectrum then Krush's use of saxaphone samples is the other end of it. Floating and etheral he uses the samples to juxtapose the denseness of the bass, and to further enhance this audio canvas he introduces subtle use of reverb and echo to draw out and morph the shape of the noises; reminiscent of the fuzzy-edge screen as used in movie dream sequences. The sheer variety of the music and sounds availble in this mix and the way in which Krush comandeers it, makes this a delight to listen again and again. Sit back, the rizlas and transcend your audio limitations.
