So this is what summer sounds like: warm and with a kitchen sink full of samples. Amazingly, The Avalanches’ creations have life and vigor, managing to sound alive through a cut-and-paste sonic wall. You’ll go blind trying to read the sample clearances. The first four tracks set the standard for the rest to follow – beautiful and groovy. Sure, a few of the subsequent tracks are mere filler, but the stand-outs make Since I Left You a joy to listen to. Listen to the vocals on “Electricity” or the John Waters sample on “Frontier Psychiatrist” and you’ll know what I mean.
