I bought the original on the day it went on sale in the UK with my 18th birthday money and rapidly learned each song before seeing them perform it live three times on the Sound Affects tour! It's a brilliant album up there with All Mod Cons and Setting Sons - the top of their game, but I always felt it was poorly recorded. To me it sounded a bit woolly and quiet compared to their other albums. I got this version for Christmas as my original Jam albums are a bit worn and scratched now and I have to say this is an excellent recording, it's loud, very clear and seems to be a lot more punchy than my original. I guess it's all down to individual taste, but I would recommend this version to anyone replacing their originals.

I’m not convinced with this remaster. Unfortunately its been a while since I heard an original but I dont recall that sounding as thin as this does. Its my favourite Jam album as well as one of my favourite “post-punk” albums full stop, so I think I’ll invest in an original and see how they sound together.

Update a few days later. OK - Original Polydor arrived today. Wow. The difference is striking imo. Sometimes Im sceptical when comparing modern masters to original ones when it comes to old albums. I noticed the difference almost immediately. The original sounds much more dynamic, the sound is rich and full, each instrument and vocal track is clean and sounds great. The remaster- to me it sounds cluttered in comparison with a digital sheen. Having listened closely to both twice I know which one is heading to ebay.

Re-master? So digitally mastered from the original analogue source? At least 10 words...
