“E.S.P.” penetrates your mind in Mono, the mix is bold and beautiful, and in my opinion, when compared to the utterly tepid and unconvincing 65’ Stereo mix, far more compelling—the Mono presentation just better transmits the elegance, sophistication, and mood (which is often either anxious, depressed, haunting, or sometimes spooky) of the record. E.S.P. proves to be the template for several of the “2nd Great Quintet’s” offshoot albums that followed; namely the tight & rapid fire “Miles Smiles”, the emotive & seductive “Sorcerer”, and last but not least, the brooding & lingering (and almost menacing really), yet mature sounding “Nefertiti”—which are all superior in their Mono presentations by the way, except for 1968’s “Nefertiti”, where for the first time, the Stereo mix becomes the primary focus and preference throughout the Music Industry.
