Edited 5 months agoPossibly Pet Shop Boys' best album since Very/Relentless (1993), although that's not difficult. Electric (2013) is quite an eclectic mix, and still struggles to produce hit singles.
That said, 'Love Is A Bourgeois Construct' is one of PSB's best ever songs, at least in twenty years, since 'Go West' (from Very). It's actually similar to 'Go West', featuring a male choir, and being a (partial) cover version (of 'Chasing Sheep Is Best Left To Shepherds').
Also, 'Thursday', featuring Example (Elliott Gleave) doing an actual rap (as opposed to Tennant's low energy raps as sometimes heard), isn't too objectionable as another single.
There were three other singles, although they weren't really worth being released (even 'Bourgeois' didn't make the UK Top 100).
Bolshy is a pop song, not a good one, and doesn't fit amongst the mostly EDM original concept, which turned into producing this full album - hence eclectic mix.
There was an accompanying commentary track for Electric. Revealingly, and concerningly, Neil and Chris skim over 'Bourgeois', paying it only lip service, suggesting their troubles stem from no longer even being able to realise when they (and Stuart Price) have produced their best song in two decades.
2/5 - 'Love Is A Bourgeois Construct' is great, but that doesn't make Electric a great album. -

Fantastic album, despite it sounding like Stuart Price feat. PSB (not a bad thing). In fact, it might be Price's euphoric sound that makes this such a sonically immaculate set of tracks. The songwriting seems to be not applicable here, but the objective of the album is crystal clear and, as a fully-fledged dance record, it satisfies. To me, this is Price's sequel to Madonna's 'Confessions on a Dancefloor'.

A great album, in fact one of their best. It's a dance album much in the vein of Introspective, or even their overlooked Relentless EP that accompanied Very. It's a much needed return to their dance roots after the somber affair that was Elysium. It's not their best effort in of songwriting, but as far as modern day dance music goes there's been little to match it in 2013 or since.

Pity, this release is very dull, outdated. Came out much too quickly, no real ideas. PSB was never a high-tech electro-feel band, so it was a bad idea to make it feel like that now. MUCH below every average melodywise, just as technicalwise.
