3 Albums that are essential for the understanding of UK Reggae... Handsworth Riots by Steel Pulse, Aswad by Aswad... and this UB40 g Off......

Edited one year agoAlthough not particularly a UB40 fan, I'd heard good things about their debut album. I picked this up for a fiver in Oxfam yesterday and am so glad I did. Despite some berk filling in the Attendance Card cover in biro, the sound of this 43-year-old vinyl is pretty astonishing, especially the 45 RPM second disc. It's a proper dub reggae album rather than the pop stylings that followed later. Don't hesitate if you see it ;)

Not a UB40 fan but saw this in a used section and bought it blind. My copy is clean and sounds amazing. Pleasantly surprised by the music itself as it is not commercial like the UB40 I knew and is incredibly good. The pressing is good, sounds great and am very pleased with it.

People seem to write UB40 off some time around Red Red Wine. That’s a shame as up until Labour Of Love 1 UB40 were one of the most exciting British reggae bands of the time. Blending in dub and roots with what would later be called post punk, g Off and it’s follow-up did no wrong imho. Tight, claustrophobic, menacing and brutal in places these albums are snapshots of early 80s Britain. I’d highly recommend this album in particular. Get this and the 12”s of The Earth Dies Screaming and Dream A Lie, and you’re sorted. The SQ is superb. No overwhelming compression here.
I myself lost interest in the band somewhere around Rat In Mi Kitchen, but g Off and Present Arms are essential purchases if you’re interested in alternative pop/rock of the early 80s. -

Evocative, bleak at times, strident, upbeat, soulful, melodic, stark, and essential! So glad to have a near mint copy in my colelction, an absolute must.

Brian travers gave this to my uncle in Birmingham 1981 and I got it as a gift in 1988. The pressing is incredible and an absolute must to anybody with an ear for great music. Also, how young the lads were when making this.....in my opinion one of the best albums ever made.

Just bought a second hand copy of this classic. I agree with Freaksmeout - the pressing is one of the best sounding I have heard from that era.

This record has absolutely been one of my favorite records for decades. Superbly mixed. Massively underappreciated.. I picked up my first copy in the mid 80s. The UK pressing is a fantastic sounding piece of vinyl. It slams!! They usually have a Gem Imports sticker on them here in the US.
