"omg i can't believe it they're totally rippin off john cage 4'33" except they're putting musical sounds where the silence should be!"
that is how all the whiners sound.
and yet somehow y'all were right about the Spiritualized mix suuuuucking hard. -
I'm 99% certain that I read a story covering the similarities between this and Tangerine Dream's "Love on real train" (from the Risky Business OST). It stated that they were asked to remix it for a then- TD remix album and did just that. That remix project was then shelved but GC were really pleased with the results, so they put out their efforts themselves initially on their seminal 76'14 album (as 8'03 and 5'23, so two mixes) before releasing it as a single, re-titled as 'Maiden Voyage'. Makes a lot of sense. Happens more often than you think.

Edited 4 years agoFunk in the fridge is a delicious chilled out trip-hop treat. It should have garnished a thousand Ibiza chill out compilations, but have so far appeared on none according to Discogs listing.

This is a timeless classic. I bought this record because it was seriously interesting, but I was never really quite sure what to do with it, mixology-wise. It also came out a few months before I first discovered the internet, so when I bought it, I thinking the website address was just a bunch of fictional gibberish. Don't quote me on this, but this may very well be the first musical recording with a URL printed on the jacket.

First, Maiden Voyage is in all points superior to the so-called "original". Secondly, "Love on a real train" was really a rip-off of Steve Reich's "Music for 18 musicians". Who's the plagiarist now?

"Maiden Voyage" is an uncredited cover version (or reinterpretation) of Tangerine Dream's "Love on a Real Train" which appeared on their "best of" album "Dream Sequence". The track was originally written for the soundtrack to the cult 80's film "Risky Business" and provided a sublime backdrop to one of the more ionate sequences in the film.
Whilst "Maiden Voyage" is a nice attempt to re-create the haunting beauty of the original, it doesn't come close and Global Communication should be spanked for ripping off one of the all-time seminal electronic outfits - without which my life, and many others, would not have been the same. -
Marginal release, except for the amazing "Funk In the Fridge". The Spiritualized mix is shrill and annoying.
