Edited 20 years agoNow that's what I call a Greatest Hits compilation!
Word-processing in a cow pasture. Big 80's hair. Bored poofter kings and eunuch angels. Sleek mink coats. Sexy scissors. Stalking maidens with a video camera. Those are only some of the visuals that spring to mind when reviewing this masterpiece.
Sensibly presented in chronological order, the viewer is inducted into what a great partnership Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart really were. We follow their (visual) development and growth from respective short, orange crops and the weirdo with the fly-shades playing symphonic synth-pop in 1983, via the "Revenge" period (which, in my humble opinion, was their most creative and solid full-band line-up), culminating in the closing chapters and hacking out some very hypnotic and cold techno material with a slight glam rock edge in 1989. However enigmatic, stylish, odd, cold or even amusing their promo videos were, now, some twenty years later, we finally realise how emotional a journey this collection of 21 clips actually does represent and that it has certainly not lost any (but rather gained in) appeal.
Delightful also are the cameo appearances by Bananarama (and Dave's future wife Siobhan Fahey) as well as a certain Marilyn in drag ;) in the "Who's That Girl?" video, this notwithstanding the numerous, chameleon-like guises that Annie Lennox herself assumes throughout this compilation... be it an orange-haired androgyne, Elvis-clone, celtic maiden, leather-clad dominatrix, mousy housewife, trashy monroe-esque vamp or the First Lady. In "The King & Queen of America" alone Annie and Dave assume some 15 or so roles!
Personal favourites list tracks 11, 13, and 16, as well as the raw energy of #8 and the sheer elegance and harsh finality of #19.
I want this one on DVD.
