As if they had been aware of their lack of breath, The Residents have returned to basics. This time, they were interested in composers who mark them and started The American Composers Series. The first opus was dedicated to George Gershwin and James Brown, each occupying one side of the record. Side A (Gershwin) is a bit anemic at first listen. The Residents struggle to embrace the language of Gershwin and they also seem to get lost in the intricacies of this orchestral music. The side dedicated to James Brown is more convincing. In the DVD of Demons Dances Alone (live), the singer tells his unexpected encounter with James Brown, whose car had broken down on the roadside. For JB, it was an just an anecdote but for The Residents it was an unforgettable moment. Their fascination with the godfather of soul is clearly palpable and the gap between the original versions and those of the Residents casts a new light on the work of James Brown.

Such a weak effort. This was the beginning of the end for me, though they managed to make some more material that was better than this awful album.
