Notes

℗ 1967

Front Cover: Laminated, flip-back sleeve design.

Back Cover: The top right part of the flip-back is blank. It does NOT read "File under POPULAR : Pop Groups". A cover containing this is a repress. Back cover includes title, credits, and song listing. Catalog number in upper right corner. Un-laminated.

Labels: Black Columbia labels with silver text, and a blue "Columbia Records Magic Notes Trademark" at the top, and a blue "Columbia" in the center. A specific font is used with the first pressing. Please compare with the photos on this release to confirm the correct label. Track 1 on Side 2, (including all writing credits), should read across one line only. If the artist credits extend to a second line, it is the repress.

Underneath the blue "Columbia" it reads "Sold in U.K. subject to resale price conditions. See price lists." On most copies, the Tax Code letters "K" and "T" are stamped on the label (on either on side 1 or 2) on each side of the spindle hole.
Text around the bottom edge of the label starts at 10 o'clock and says:
The Gramophone Co., Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited.

Inner Sleeve #1: Cream colored inner sleeve. On the front is an EMI logo at the top center, with "Add these outstanding LPs to your collection" at the top, 16 LP covers pictured in the middle including Both Sides of Herman's Hermits, and "-the new Emitex cleans and preserves your records," and "Patents applied for" at the bottom. On the back is an EMI logo at the top center, with " - the greatest recording organization in the world" at the top, 16 LP covers pictured in the middle including the Beatles-Revolver, and "E.M.I. Records (The Gramophone Company Ltd.) Hayes - Middlesex - England, Made and Printed in Great Britain" at the bottom.

Inner Sleeve #2: Reddish brown printing on cream colored paper. On the front side is the EMI logo at the top center, with "Add these outstanding LPs to your collection" at the top, 16 LP covers pictured in the middle including The Beatles-Sgt. Peppers, and "-the new Emitex cleans and preserves your records," and "Patents applied for" at the bottom. On the back side is the EMI logo at the top center, with " - the greatest recording organization in the world" at the top, 16 LP covers pictured in the middle including Pink Floyd-Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and "E.M.I. Records (The Gramophone Company Ltd.) Hayes - Middlesex - England, Made and Printed in Great Britain" at the bottom.

I love the stereo as much as the mono. What mood I am in dictates the mix I choose for that particular listening time of day.
Mono, somedays, Stereo others. It is a moo subject really because we all like diffrent mixes here and there, on different occasions, don't we?🤐

It is time to stop this nonsense about repressings. I have a perfect copy of The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn with a black and white inner (inner sleeve nr. 1). My cover does state "File under POPULAR : Pop Groups". According to the above information, my copy is a later repress. So explain my blue COLUMBIA label, SIUK statement and sans-serif tex with a matrix that states: YAX-3419-1, 1, A. According to this matrix, my copy is one of the first 1500 ever made, yet it is called a repress.
Secondly, the sepia colored inner sleeves came later, and even the Pink Floyd LP and an LP by Lulu that wasn't released before December, 1967. Therefore, the sepia inners couldn't possibly be included with the first pressings. How can anybody justify calling a copy with a sepia inner a first pressing, yet dismiss an LP with an extremely low matrix as a repressing? More research needs to be done before these LPs can be determined to be repressings, as the current justification doesn't make sense. I agree with the review given by Timeware.

My copy which I purchased 40 years ago seems to have all the elements of the LP first pressing (as described on this page, including sans serif font on labels, Interstellar Overdrive & credits on one line, K and T next to the spindle hole, etc.) on the record itself but the cover DOES have the "File under POPULAR" on the back/top-right of the outer sleeve. I doubt anyone actually combined a first-press LP with a second-press jacket 40 years ago ... These records just weren't that valuable. I know that sometimes the first-press records get put in a second-press jacket if there are more of the records than the jackets. Such a great LP although I prefer the first-press UK mono's.
