Autechre – Tri Repetae

Weird(ish) question, my copy contained 2 CDs, has anybody else purchased the album and gotten 2 discs? It's actually been quite interesting and enjoyable to play both discs at almost the same time with one disc offset by a second...

Definitely marked a focused shift in direction which keeps more in line with the Gescom stuff around the same time.

This album change not only Autechre music sound forever, but also electronic music.
Autechre are like the sound probe Voyager 1, that currently is coming from the solar system to get through the heliopause into interstellar space.
When for first time i listen this, a fresh firsts copy arrive in Italy, more than twenty years ago, I not believe my ears...
I stay more than two hours with headphones listen and re listen from beginning to the end on a turntable of an underground music shop in Florence. Sometimes i look the shopkeeper that listen it on headphone too, and him look at me, both with mouth open like two perfect idiots... Was 1995 man, not 2095...
That sound, like a movie soundtrack, paint an impossible travel trought universe, in cold planets , in acid neon gleaming ligts that illuminate futuristic city where industrial machines and cyborgs was the only form of life...
Nothing till today have done the same effect on my auditive system... nothing.
If you want swim inside electronic music universe, Autechre will be your spaceship. If you want visit the most strange, cold, inhuman and futuristic place of that universe, so Tri Repetae is your wormhole...
An absolute music ART masterpiece and for sure without any doubt, the best Autechre album ever.

Listen to this. Unique in all but genre.

Probably one of there best releases,although not as good as "incunabula" its still supreme in every way possible from start to finish but my attention is focused on STUD for this review. Which is one of the most hardcore intelligent techno tunes I've ever heard not in the sense its hardcore as early rave jargon its just brutal and tripped out and so hard sounds awesome probably my favourite track by the duo not forgetting 444 its that riff underneath which sends a shudder down my spine. Stud, Clipper and Eutow are the stand out tracks but there all good. This is definitely the highlight of there career. There other track Gescom Keynell 4 and the 2 AE remixes will blow your mind.

Tri Repetae is a warm, rhythm oriented collection of songs but at the same time is on the far end of Ae's slow transition to very cold, arhythmic, computer generated music you see later. I wonder if one reason the older stuff is more approachable is because it is just slower. The later stuff (e.g. Confeld) has so many samples/minute and beats/minute. This album is less demanding.

Does anyone else go crazy for that sinuous, thick, winding, red-hot steel ingot pad/lead on Clipper at 1:44?

After this album is when I waved goodbye to Autechre, for this CD marks their last "human" effort. Their albums over the years have become more and more expiremental, and I dare say too hard to possibly appreciate in the same way as their first 3 albums.

Tri Repetae still has the organic elements of Incunabula and Amber, but with a more robot feel. A lot more sounds and percussion styles used in this one. While this album is amazing, it was clear that Autechre wanted to keep pushing the boundaries of what you can do with sounds, not rhythym.

By the time their next album came out, Chiastic Slide, I had lost interest in what they were all about. Hopefully they'll return to making more logical music someday... but until, this is my farewell album to them.

Used to be a huge fan of theirs at the time. Incunabula had been straight success, Amber was even deeper. When this record came, I was astonished by the difference they could provide on every album, but it didn't last, the EPs started to crack already and their sound started to form into that freaky stuff they're best known today. For me this record is important because it represents the last days of their music when it still used to be good.
