(My first pressing of this album is perfect.)
The official Soft Cell site has been advertising a re-release of In Strict Tempo for a while now (the "2024 edition").
1983. I buying and playing this immediately at time of release. This is a remarkable album, standing out as a rare gem on many levels. Post-punk had declared anything possible and a lot of challenging, truly inspired music was taking form. Disturbing, sleezy, good lyrics, but also beautifully formed with an excellent, strong / weird combination of classical, pop, electronica, industrial . . . no wonder, given the contributors: Dave Ball leading and constructing; with Virginia Astley, GPO, John Balance, Gavin Friday, Flood, Gary Barnacle. Because of punk, the music is of its time but still, ahead, or more correctly, outside of time – as many unique musical compositions are.
It will be interesting to see what Dave does for this edition, I hope he uses the opportunity to present a proper archival collection. It’s time to unearth and reconsolidate all the bits together. I assume he might remix or reassess some pieces as he does with Soft Cell re-releases. I’m not sure how necessary that would be as the original is spot on; but obviously I trust him, especially with his own project. More importantly, I’m sure there is a trove of bonus material, the promos, 12”s and singles of the time.
The cover artwork is superb as is, John Balance drumming at the human drum (“Bee” as MatthewGB says below). Genius, all in hot red. However, that said, the artwork for the rare Belgian Scarface 12” is fascinating too, so the artwork could be more inclusive.
Fingers crossed, it’s great such an exciting gem is being given the chance to play to a few more listeners. -
A large batch of the first press were terrible, jumping and skipping all over the place. However they clean up a treat with a bit of TLC and patience. Bare that in mind if you spot a copy going cheap for that reason
