I wrote a highly favorable review on Ms Swift's "folklore" album released this summer because IMHO, I felt it was the best thing she has released at least for this listener. Now she has unleashed another 17 tracks with little notice with mostly the same collaborators as with her previous album but primarily Aaron Dessner and the National being made front and center this time round.
She says in the liner notes that she just couldn't stop writing songs so this is the product of the year of the quarantine. So it is for most, a continuation of "folklore", Part II, if you may. It does have the same vibe, perhaps a more spare production than "folklore", but unfortunately fewer catchy songs. The themes are more limited to relationships this time. To be fair, it would be highly unlikely for any artist to write as many great songs in such a short time frame, and that includes most of my favorite artists from my youth. One problem may lie in the collaborator being Aaron Dessner and the National as I find their music suffering from somewhat a sameness, but I will be the first to it that I am not a big fan of the band.
As with other reviewers, I would agree that as a whole this is a very good album and offers some great songs such as "Champagne Problems", "Dorothea", "Gold Rush", "'Tis the Damn Season", to name a few, but I think I was spoiled from the first listens of "folklore" and any follow up would still be ultimately somewhat of a letdown.
As musical tastes are very personal, I would conclude with this - if you liked "folklore", you will like "evermore" being the bookend album of this unprecedented year. Just don't expect it to be the best thing you ever heard from Ms Swift.
