While Undertow doesn't do quite as much for me as for me as Opiate, it's still a really solid debut album. To me, the biggest downgrades on here are the vocals, along with songwriting at times. The vocals aren't bad, but they don't quite draw me in like they did on Opiate. In of songwriting, I feel certain tracks on Undertow meander and repeat a bit too much, and mainly lack the punch and immediecy that existed on Opiate. It feels weird saying that because these songs do pack a major punch, but Opiate hit all my marks for a near perfect release. Also, the whole "idea" of "Disgustipated" is pretty annoying and a waste of time. The whole hidden track thing always was annoying in the cd era. I can't imagine how annoying it would be to have a vinyl copy, as I believe that track alone is the reason for this being a double lp, when it realistically should've been a single lp.
Some of the strongest aspects of this record are that filthy ass guitar tone, along with the rythm section's mastery of ever-changing time signatures. Also hearing Henry Rollins voice on "bottom" is always fun.
(I feel like the guitar riff near the end of "undertow" was used and reused by Mastodon like 95 times)

I see a lot of confusion on this Album.. Its so sad to see TOOL has aloud so many bootlegs to be sold on Ebay at a legal level. the world is confused with the LP's.... Back in 1993 there was only about 1000k clear viny'ls pressed and 1000 grey vinyl's… The chances of you walking into a store today and finding one of these LEGIT copies in a store will be as rare as hens teeth.
these albums were PROMO's.. they could not fit Discustipated one 1 vinyl they needed a double LP.. this was a cheaper way to get the word out about TOOL they really were not to popular until Aenima came out. None the less they only ever made a Green / Clear version and a grey...… And ALWAYS !!! they have a matrix never in a zillion years will you hear of a LP with NO matrix from the 90's. I hope I help people understand this Album and if Not feel free to message back …
