Edited 15 years agoYou know, after listening to all the tracks on Homework, I can't help but feel this is a pretty overrated album. I feel that half of the songs are excellent, but the other half on here may as well not even be considered songs at all. It's a rather strange contrast. The first half of the album starts off really great with Daftendirekt/WDPK 87.3, Da Funk, Around the World, Revolution 909, Fresh, all these really great songs. And then you get to Rollin' and Scratchin' (which shouldn't be considered a song it's so terrible, what's so good about this song?) and that's where Homework just falls flat. It feels like Daft Punk just stopped trying and started mixing random crap together, whilst looping it over, and over, and over again. Burnin', Rollin' and Scratchin', Rock N' Roll, and Oh Yeah are just noise tracks (although Burnin' has an excellent bassline, it's a shame it's overshadowed by the horrible DJ scratching and fire alarms), Indo Silver Club and High Fidelity are ridiculously repetitive and annoying. Alive and Teachers aren't bad, just not all that great either. And Funk Ad is...Da Funk played backwards for a minute. What a waste of space! How can you go from some of the most revolutionary house songs of all time (Around the World, Da Funk) to just plain noise all in one album? What were they thinking on some of these tracks? And the excellent B-Side to Da Funk, Musique, should've been on here as well in my opinion. But instead we got...Rock N' Roll and Rollin' and Scratchin', two tracks that make me want to break the CD so that no one should ever have to hear them. Oh gee, how wonderful.
Overall, buy Homework for the great first 7 songs or so (plus maybe Teachers), and forget the other 7. If you already have the singles for Around the World, Revolution 909, and Da Funk, the only thing you're really missing out on here is Fresh, and you already have Musique to boot.
