I'm going to be controversial here and go out and say that this album is one of the most genius releases of the early 2010s and was a seminal release in disco-revival in popular music. A band that had built their careers on a heavily computerised, industrial french house sound that blurred the lines behind human and machine, produced an almost entirely analogue album of songs lamenting the loss of soul in music. From the get go this album is a commentary on the music industry, and how popular dance music is contrived and mass produced by machines, with no humanity left. And this preaching is all done brilliantly by vocoderised robotic voices with analogue sound backing. A true antithesis to the machine produced, vocal dance music the decade was experiencing. I see this as a lament of the increasing soullessness of dance music and a hark back to a time when dance music was fun, uninhibited and human. With brilliant guest stars, this feast of disco and downtempo surges from strength to strength, still with signature Daft Punk sounds, but continuing to address where the life in music went. And arguably single-handedly heralding the disco resurgence (along with Todd Terje and the very talented nu-disco folk), Daft Punk changed popular dance music with this album. 5/5/

In retrospect, having listened to the album over 60 times, I've reached the following conclusions:

      1. It is very uneven stylistically. Rock, disco, techno sylings, etc. It's all over the place, and there are some clunkers on it.
      2. Contrary to popular belief, not mixed well. Seriously over-boomy in the low end dept, and a bit over compressed in mastering.
      3. I personally wish Nile Rodgers were on more than just 3 tracks. I want more disco. "Lose yourself to Dance" really needed to be developed more. As it stands, it seems unfinished. (I actually added synth parts to it and posted it to soundcloud...check it out)
      4. For Daft Punk being synth dudes, the tones on the album are far from compelling. They are quite generic, in fact. (I may be splitting hairs here, but I expect better sound design from these guys)

All in all, as far as MAINSTREAM music goes, I would take this LP over 99% of the fodder out there, hands down.
