Music for the Jilted Generation is the second album by English electronic dance music band The Prodigy. The album was released through XL Recordings in July 1994.
The album is largely a response to the corruption of the rave scene in Britain by its mainstream status as well as Great Britain's Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which criminalised raves and parts of rave culture. This is exemplified in the song "Their Law" with the spoken word intro and the predominant lyric, the "Fuck 'em and their law" sample. Many years later, after the controversy died down, Liam Howlett derided the title of the album, which he referred to as "stupid", and maintained that the album was never meant to be political in the first place. The album is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Edited 22 days agoI have this non-gatefold version, but the inner sleeves are plain white, not printed, run outs are very hard to see, but they match, as does the barcode, has "recordings" under XL on label and misspelled name on back cover -
Edited one month agoAll about skylined for me… keep the rest. Maybe voodoo people and the dust brothers remix … and poison … ok it’s not half bad is it 😆 so much better than Fat of the Land. Their first two albums are absolutely killer. Pure punk. Love it
If my memory serves me right - was this not in part a reaction to the criminal justice act, eventually ed in the autumn of 1994… ?
How’s the repress. Their debut repress sounded awful -
others insisted liam howlett is a writing credit for a (..) breeding ground of various artists: btw the volume is quite low but the bassdrum + snaredrum is an economic skeleton that is holding (on dynamic processors) to this day, add some midrange, dip some top-end and realise how low-end the production is -

Edited 2 months agoAlso interesting is that the digital version misses the Radio 1 Maida Vale Session tracks.
So if you want to here those tracks, don't buy the digital version without thinking. -
Edited 3 months agostill confused as to why this didnt win mercury prize over um, m people. anyone still listen to that today?? only reason i can think of is liam probaly wouldnt have picked up his award. 27 yrs after i first heard it, only just realising all the samples !

I am not sure if there is something wrong with my copy, but it is crazy crazy low in volume, I have had to crank my amp up to get it to a reasonable level. no noise or anything, so it is quite in that respect, but just be aware when switching between other vinyl. -
No complaints at all - the sound is great, the packaging is cool, the surface is quiet. An excellent release of a classic album.

Amazing! What a record. The inside artwork by Les Edwards of this gatefold is insane! I was not expecting it at all. What a time in the UK rave scene where they deemed “the emission of a succession of repetitive beats” illegal. Oh Keith! RIP brother. F$ck the system!! -
