Be aware: This is a radio DJ promo, so on all these tracks, the expletives in Renton's speech are muted. -
Edited 9 years agoThe Moonman remix is the only decent mix of this track, and bizarrely it was never officially issued!
The only way you can find it is on this yellow (or pink) 12", and I'm not even sure if it's a legal pressing.
I'm sure Ferry still has the master recording, so hopefully one day he will try and get it reissued on .wav file. The vinyl does sound really good, but I'd still love a clean digital copy.
Fingers crossed. -
Edited 18 years agoThis was the original release of this track before it was licensed to Positiva and went onto chart success. This track is probably most famous for the speech that was sampled from the classic film Trainspotting. I feel that apart from the speech this was really just a very generic trance tune of the time but the inclusion of the Trainspotting dialogue took this track to another level and secured it a place in trance music history.

I am astounded that this single has never received more appraisal and attention. I when I bought it I was positive it would become a sought after classic. It still hasn't. Fortunately the music has more than made up for that. This is quite simply one of the best tracks Underworld never made and always kicks the living shit out of me. Hard, aggressive, looooong and trippy, it actually topples the expectations I had to a Trainspotting sound track.
But as for the general opinion, I have NEVER had success with this when playing it for, albeit, mainstream audiences. What is wrong with this track?!

The vocals which are used in ‘Choose Life’ are done by the actor Ewan McGregor. He played in famous movies such as ‘Star Wars’ and ‘A Life Less Ordinary’. The vocal part in ‘Choose Life’ is taken from the famous cult movie ‘Trainspotting’ (by Danny Boyle) from 1996. McGregor is also playing in this movie (he’s playing the character ‘Renton’).
The original version made by ‘PF Project’ was released in 1997 on the well known UK label Positiva. When Ferry was asked to do a remix of the track, the ‘Trainspotting’ movie wasn’t even out. So Ferry hadn’t even heard about the movie and no one actually knew that it was going to be such a big success. The vocal parts with the spoken dialogue by Ewan McGregor: (‘Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family’ etc.) were censored, so you couldn’t hear the ‘F-word’ in it.
Ferry made a very decent remix of the track. The nice pumping bassline in his remix does remind me a bit of the bassline in the ‘Gouryella’ track ‘Gouryella’. As far as my information goes, the ‘Moonman Remix’ never saw an official retail release. There were only some limited pink vinyls pressed with Ferry’s remix on the A-side and a remix by ‘The Unknown DJ’ on the B-side. There is no catalog number pressed in the vinyl. You can only find the text 'PF Project - Choose Life' pressed in the vinyl.
