Compilation album.
Released date: May 8, 1990.
"Greatest Hits" is a compilation album by the Bangles. It was released by their record company, Columbia Records on May 8, 1990 to fulfil the band's contractual requirements; by the time of the release of the album, the group had already broken up. The album peaked at #97 on the US Billboard 200 and at #4 in the UK Albums Chart.
The album features the single remixes of "Hero Takes a Fall", "Walking Down Your Street" and "I'll Set You Free". It also includes the 7" version of the Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" cover, which original version was released on the soundtrack of the film Less Than Zero, and had not been included on a Bangles album. It also contains the non-album B-side cover of The Grass Roots' "Where Were You When I Needed You" and the previously unreleased song "Everything I Wanted" from the Everything album sessions.
"Everything I Wanted" was released as a single around Europe and Australia to promote the release. In the UK, a new remix of "Walk Like an Egyptian" was released instead, peaking at #73.
In Australia "I'll Set You Free" was backed by "Everything I Wanted" — later released as a single in its own right in 1990 — and was housed in a different picture sleeve.

Totally agree with previous comments. Maybe not reference material but very pleasant to listen to. Well balanced recording. -

Great sounding record. Too bad this was never pressed in the US, but was worth paying the shipping to have this in my collection. -

Can’t believe this does not have reviews. Awesome album, well recorded. The guitar on A7 comes across so real (Rega P10, Aura, MF KW550 to B&W 804D3). -

Every info page I read about this Greatest Hits album says it's the single mixes of Hero Takes A Fall & Walking Down Your Street - I just don't get why. Even online when you listen through Apple or Spotify that's not the case.
So I listened to the mixes on the Greatest Hits disc I have along with an old CD issue of both All Over The Place & Different Light. All the same song versions across the board - only difference is the Greatest Hits disc has a remastering when I went track for track with the album counterpart.
My Hits disc does however have different versions of I'll Set You Free & Be With You - so clearly different from their album track versions, compared to with an old CD pressing of the album Everything. -
Edited 4 years agoThis might be an original issue from Mexico. I have the same copy with identical barcode & Matrix/Runout numbers. Strangely, this pressing includes the album mixes of "Hero Takes a Fall" and "Walking Down Your Street" rather than the single remixes that are featured on all other issues of 'Greatest Hits'. Additionally, the version of "I'll Set You Free" included here also differs from all other releases: in that it fades 5 seconds sooner. This same "early fade out version" was included as a bonus track on the Cherry Pop re-issue of 'Everything' in 2012. Therefore, the run times are incorrect for "Walking Down Your Street" (actual time 3:05) and "I'll Set You Free" (actual time 4:44).

Entire album design including cover, inside book, back cover and original colour CD was done by Belle Piec when working for Traffic Design Studios. Only the cover photograph was supplied in hard copy black and white. The Bangles were very happy with the design.
