Grover Washington, Jr. – Winelight

Strange. On this Japanese SHM-CD from 2009, the marimbas and percussion are on the right channel, while on the CD editions 1987 from , it sounds on the left. Who reversed?

Revisiting this record just now and holy frick it smokes. Sound quality is exquisite

Awesome release, deadquiet pressing. Sound clean and smooth. I have 24/192 flac and listened 24/192 on Qobus, what can I say… I think the same mastering but sounding totally different. On vinyl more dynamic and clarity. Like it so much.

Both sides here are rich, full-bodied and musical . This is a classic Grover Washington album containing the hit “Just The Two Of Us.” I happen to like this record for what it is: good pop jazz. If that ain’t your thing this record is unlikely to change your mind, but if you’re a fan of the genre I imagine you’ll be delighted with the sound and music here. What’s unusual about this album is how MEATY the bottom end is. Recommended !

Sounds great, but please note it is very, very likely the source material was the modern 24/192 file that is streaming and for already. If you like vinyl for the experience, sure, but not an audiophile pressing. Also the cover is super cheap and thin.

The smooth jazz world was so well defined in this album that it almost got its equivalent of a Marvelverse: very clear mixing, loads of dynamics, synth pads, bassline, and a sax that even when it gets wild it never sounds too loud. And that _elegant_ cover with the lense flare. The smooth jazz scene was aiming at sophistication, at dinner with friends with bottles of red wine in the candle lights, or to the previous flirting with alcohol before having sex - Grover Washington Jr and the rest of the musicians did not appear in the cover, leaving the music and the cover to let the listener to run wild with their imagination.

This awareness of the branding is what fascinates me the most about Winelight, but apart from that is a hell of a masterpiece of the genre. The jams sound so well, everyone is fine tuned, the sax solos are incredible, and the hits, title song and "Just the two of us", are defining moments (even when the steel drum solo is something everyone could live without). Not really breaking grounds from what was established in the funk-jazz world in the 70s, but just, "just" a very inspired work.

very pleased with the quiet, clean and musical pressing! I don't have any others to compare to but I'm happy I got it, primarily for the full version of 'Just The Two Of Us'. Smooth jazz added to the collection!

One of my all-time favorite contemporary jazz lps and simply the best, most accurate recording of Winelight!

Best digital format recording of this LP that I have ever found and I've bought many from around the world and several from Japan. If there is a better recording, it is the Nautilus half speed vinyl which I listen regularly!
