This is one of the first albums ever in my collection as I was only able to afford thrift store albums for the first year, and of course Paul Horn's "Inside" always shows up there! I'm somewhat amazed that I'm giving this 5 stars. It's a rather conceited concept for an album, and it borders on new age, and yet Paul Horn's conservative playing alongside the vocal performances is pretty much perfect note-for-note. A lesson in how conservative playing can say more at times than the busiest performance. And the echo effect in the Taj Mahal is simply amazing to listen to. As the liner notes say, it's difficult to tell when the playing ends and where the echo begins. It is a breathtaking, absorbing effect, and this album is the place to hear it. My bet: One of the best albums you can find at any thrift store you walk into.

        Wow,
Rykodisc ‎– RCD 10040 is a very disappointing CD
This remaster clips the first 30 seconds of prologue ... no "soundroll 66"

This is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word. It’s recorded live, the first and only take. Read the liner notes (which only come in early gatefold pressings) for the incredible story of how this came to be. The music however, speaks for itself. Some of the most healing music you will ever hear, and sounds that were never previously created until this point.

I highly suggest this album for anyone battling cancer or severe pain. I gave this to a friend battling colon cancer and it's one of the only things he could listen to. This is a man who loved reggae and hip hop, things you can't listen to while rapidly dying. It helped him tremendously throughout his daily life to relax what little he could.

Anyone with any sense of appreciation for art can see the brilliance in this recording. I give very few albums a perfect rating, but I literally give this 100 out of 100. A true, spontaneous masterpiece that cannot be improved upon.

A record to suit all moods, situations and spaces. Paul Horn created a timeless, beautiful record here in all it's simplicity - it never fails to create an aura of tranquility as soon as one sets the needle to the record. I often listen to this first thing in the morning, it serves very well as an aural 'leveler' serving to cleanse one's mind before the day ahead. Many thanks for the beautiful sounds and may you rest in

There's nothing "free jazz" about this album. It's a non-electronic "new age"/"ambient" album.

This album is common as dirt, you can easily find it for next to nothing. I find this album truly relaxing and peaceful. Most albums described as such sound so insipid that I'm happy I don't own those albums (I am old enough to have been inflicted with those Zamfir TV ads in the 1980s and even as a kid I thought that stuff was nauseating). Not what Paul Horn had did here. In 1968 he was in India, in the middle of filming a documentary that was never completed and took time to the Taj Mahal for some recordings there, just as a souvenir. He wasn't thinking of having it released as an album (he probably thought most people would think an album with just flute and the occasional voice from a Taj Mahal guard would be boring). Epic Records thought otherwise and they actually had it released and it actually sold well. Each song has that wonderful Eastern influence, and I dig the echo of the Taj Mahal. Here it's hard telling where Paul Horn's flute ends and the echo begins. I especially love that echo. He chose the right place to record. Sometimes the guard would provide his voice too, usually just himself, but on "Unity" it's both him and Horn's flute. When it comes for some dreamy, night time music, this has replaced Enigma's MCMXC a.D. as my favorite, because there are no dance beats to get in the way, and I love that exotic vibe that goes throughout the album.
