I have a lot of old Techno mixtapes from the nineties...
Is it useful to keep them, maybe better to them on Soundcloud?
Trade them? Thanks for any ideas... -
Show this post
digitize them & share them online
its the best way to preserve history! -
Show this post
Preserve them! I have heaps of sets (stored on data CDs) that I used to and I don't know what to do with them. I will not get rid of them, I know that.
Maybe one day I'll them to YouTube, but it will take a lot of time & effort. -

archive.org also has a mixtape section -

Does someone know if it is possible to restore a tape?
I have a tape from Loveparade 1992 and it is a bit twisted...
I like this tape and have good memories with it so I would like to let it repair - if possible! -

if its chewed most likely not, low noise hiss and other aging problem should be possible -
Show this post
No , it´s not chewed - it´s just twisted in parts, that means that you hear the other side in reverse and vice versa...
....only several minutes then it´s clear again! -
Show this post
Small screwdriver at hand, when the tape enters the point where its twisted then simply remove the screws and carefully turn around the tape roll so its good again.
screws back and it should be fine -

I guess I will give it a try!I heard there are some companies that repair it for you too...
Just don´t want to damage anything!
It´s fun to listen to all those old tapes - it´s like treasure hunting! And it gives you a better/warmer feeling than all this mp3 bullshit....
I have a few that are torn, maybe I can fix them?I am curious and excited what music is on these...(c: -

I have an Astroboy Mix tape from 94, he's a DJ from St. Louis, the tape snapped and I took it apart and used scotch tape to put it back together and then quickly digitized it. Might as well hang the cassette on the wall, even though it still plays. You know cassette players are getting harder to find, too bad because you can't fix or tape together a broken cd :(
Fuck it, send them all to me, yum yum, I'll eat them up.
A very large chunk of the Southern Cali scene from like 90-97 is on Simfonik.com People like DJ Dan, Ron D Core, Steve Loria, DJ Curious, Ernie Munson, lots of others. He's a good example of what you might want to do. Check it out. Sounds like you have some stuff I'd be really interested in seeing as how you're from . Have any of the Cologne sound? Like Sven Vath, The Omen, Frankfurt, etc? -

No,unfortunately I have no sound from Cologne on tape - only on vinyl :) -

practise on an old tape first, it isnt rocket science, just be calm when doing it and you'll be fine, thats how we did it back in the day anyways ;0)
Or like Alex said above, cutting it and taping it and enjoy or re-use the tape again :) -

I used to fix tapes sometimes like that - open it with screwdriver and fix the loose ends together with scotch tape,it always worked fine!!!
Maybe you know the joke of the picture with a pencil and a tape on it - what you can do with it???

I really need to get round to getting these old mixes converted from my tapes :
https://discogs.librosgratis.biz/Dave-Angel-Juan-Atkins-Scorpio-Techno-Trance-Exposure/release/1159612
... I played them to death years ago but desperately need to get round converting them.. All 6 tapes are awesome mixes ...Not seen or heard them online anywhere. -
Show this post
would be great to hear them!
do you know how to convert them or have the possibility to do it? -
Show this post
Yes I think it's possible.. Leave it with me. I'll see what I can do... Once ripped they'll need some fine tuning.. Just hope the tapes themselves are still in good working order.. The tape player I have to hand right now isn't the best but I can just try it out and see how it goes... Got some free time at the moment so I'll get onto it ..I'll share here once they're done to hopefully a suitable standard audio wise ..watch this space!! -

It took me ages to be able to do it in a proper way!
First I had audio tape converter like IOS.What a wobbling around!
And always problems with the software, and background noise....
In the early 2000s I used Goldwave for listening on an Mp3 Player.
I tried Audacity after I bought a used Technics tape-deck with Auto reverse.
(I threw 3 old tapedecks to the trash)
Problems with the cable (Cinch on USB).
I tried some converter from M-Audio...
Always problems/hassle with cable connections.
I have had it!But now with a normal Audio recorder on my Mac and Cinch to mini jack plug it works.
No professional audio conversion, but it works!
And you can use a cleaning tape for the deck just in case the tape head was under heavy use... -

I use Acid Pro, just hook the cassette player up to the mic jack on the computer and use the record function to record a file. -

I've loads of fairly rare early-mid 90's acid, techno & trance mixes, most of which I ed from a particular on slsk. He may have ripped his own tapes, seeing that nobody else had them. Should I SC pro unlimited and start ing them? I'm not sure if he's sharing them anymore or whether he even logs onto slsk these days, either. -

I don't know what it was like in other countries, but in the US during the 90's, there used to be cassette vendors at all the raves, usually with a huge amount of various cassettes for sale. We need to get one of those guys up here to digitize their collection. You know the people I mean!
:) -

We bought tapes at our (local) record dealers in the nineties!
Like Hard Wax/Berlin or here in Munich.Stuff like Bloody Fist and other mixes or promo tapes...
I haven´t noticed if tapes have been sold on raves in .
We traded them/ed them! -

Hi musicshaolin,
These look very interesting, thanks.
Have you transferred them from tape to wav file (or flac), instead of mp3? Lossless is better :) -

Hello,
I have transferred to M4a and mp3.
Wav files are too big,so are .aiff.
AAC would be possible too...
Let me know if it is not working! -

Nice one m8! :)
@ Dsystem - mp3 is just fine, be glad someone takes the time and effort to do this big time consuming job! -

Thank you mate!
To listen to all the music is like travelling through time and space!
So many good memories...
...and you notice how time goes by!
I just want to record these tapes as long as they are playable(it is said that a tape is playable about 30-40 years),
after that I can throw them to the trash, trade them or whatever. -

In fact I am very glad. I just asked Musicshaolin in the case he has transferred them to wav before compressing. Great music should be preserved at the highest quality possible, in my humble opinion. -

All my mixtapes were stored in the basement of my brother's business because I couldn't bring them with me to the USA to live here. Ten years ago the basement was flooded and all the tapes damaged along with few vinyls. I was devastated with such waste, I had lives from French maxximum radio station on those tapes, you can't put a value on history. -

What is frustrating actually with all those gorgeous mixes on YouTube is that there is no DL, and no alternative links to enable links.
