I love the harp. I have a question, and I apologise if it seems ignorant and unfounded; but are almost all harpists female? I've never "seen" a male harpist. Is that a thing or is it just my limited experience? Again I could be well wrong. -

Saw Charles Overton playing harp with singer Ganavya last week at the Union Chapel in London. Believe he plays with Boston Symphony Orchestra and plays jazz as well. -

There are male harpists, but it's true that most seem to be female. I have no idea why that might be. Maybe a self-fulfilling thing, it's seen as a more feminine instrument, therefore attracts more females and some males maybe get put off by that too?
The harp is the national symbol of Ireland, it's on our coins, notes, ports, official documents, etc. Apparently, traditionally, it was more of a male instrument. The harper was an important part of the aristocratic Gaelic household for many centuries, and they were almost always male. From the 20th Century it became dominated by women. -

As a plastic I should have known that. I it on all the old punt coins and notes. It's just one of those things that I feel as if I've always seen played by females. Did Enya play it too? Anyway, I think it' a lovely instrument. Nowadays I love any real instruments. -

Always liked the sound of the harp (and related instruments). Prefer it from the sound of generic plonking pianos to be honest (unpopular opinion, come at me suckers!). Sounds nice in classical / orchestral music as well as loads of different styles of folk music around the world. Even heard it in some jazz / psych stuff which sounded pretty wild. About 20+ years ago I heard this unknown Nigerian guy play a miniature version of a harp, virtuoso style with a band / small orchestra at Finsbury Park incorporating it with their own local, traditional folk music, jazz-fusion and European folk music. Nuts! It's actually quite a versatile instrument. -

Can anyone recall a Surgeon track from late 90's that features a harp? I knew it at one time having got it id ' d on Little Detroit (😳) and I then wrote it down to buy but lost the notebook.
It's a full on track and I've gone through tonnes of his back catalogue but can't find it. -

If I well, there are several on Björk - Vespertine that feature harp, and on many other Bjõrk's releases, usually played by Zeena Parkins. -
