Daevid Allen – Continental Circus

This is a great album that a lot of fans probably missed, when they were tripping to the Gong message. This shows the origins of Camembert Electrique with only the vocals getting the work over for the CE release. Gilli wrote some pulsating trippy stuff that David took to a new level in the story of the Planet Gong. Lots of bands lost their tribal rhythmic sounds as they evolved, Gong, Hawkwind, even Floyd. Record company pressure maybe, you must change your sound and move with the times. Here we are back at the start again with new bands trying to do what has been done before. I've seen that trip before...Gong Est Mort, Vive La Gong!!!

Continental Circus was a film soundtrack done by Gong. Apparently it was recorded before Camembert Electrique, but released after. This album seemed to have fallen through the cracks, which is really too bad, this is great stuff. It has that same Gong sound, except Daevid Allen isn't singing about Pot Head Pixies, but about a motorcycle racer, which is the subject of the movie. All the Gong elements are here: quirky vocals from Daevid Allen, glissando guitar, jazzy arrangements, including sax from Didier Malherbe.
"What Do You Want?" is essentially "Fohat Digs Holes in Space", but with a different set of lyrics and a slightly slower pace. To me, the album doesn't deserve to be so ignored. I really think it's as much of an album as Camembert Electrique, or the Radio Gnome trilogy, and so on. If you prefer the psychedelic, Daevid Allen-led Gong, your collection isn't complete without this album.
