Notes
Continental Circus is the original soundtrack album of the 1972 French documentary film of the same name directed by Jérôme Laperrousaz. Released in April 1972 on Philips Records, the album is credited to "Gong avec Daevid Allen" and was recorded and mixed in two days in the spring of 1971, a few months before the band's 1971 album Camembert Electrique was made. Laperrousaz was a close friend and er of Allen and his partner Gilli Smyth and the film, starring Jack Findlay and Giacomo Agostini, is about motorcycle road racing.
The track "What Do You Want?" is the same piece as "Fohat Digs Holes in Space" on Camembert Electrique, but the version here lacks the intro, has different lyrics and is played slightly slower. The track entitled "Continental Circus World" consists of dialogue and sound effects from the film, backed with a looped excerpt from "Blues for Findlay", the album's only new composition.
The album features English drummer Pip Pyle who had recently ed the band, having been introduced to Daevid Allen by Robert Wyatt during the recording of Allen's debut solo album, Banana Moon, in February.

i have been a fan of gong since my youth, both d.allen and p. moerlen strains, but i overlooked this awesome album.
the original soundtrack is without synths and mostly intrumental, and more heavy guitardriven psychedelic rock. lot of allens famous glissando guitars.
it is very rhythmic/ repitive and hypnotic.
very much rare bonustracks are included here, singles and french tv live material. both the album itself and the bonus tracks are. essential for any gong fan. -
Are the labels injection moulded in the photos you show here? Look like paper? My cover & labels are exactly as you show but the labels seem like paper??

Wasn't this record released in 1971????? I have what Discogs say is original, but I have listed it as a 2nd press BECAUSE of the PHONOGRAM!!! So ladies and gangsters, give a damn, it's opposite of what's written as original and RE here. -

What Do You Want sounds remarkably like a pre emptive Fohat Digs Holes in Space ...Nice x -
Edited 6 years agoThis is a great album that a lot of fans probably missed, when they were tripping to the Gong message. This shows the origins of Camembert Electrique with only the vocals getting the work over for the CE release. Gilli wrote some pulsating trippy stuff that David took to a new level in the story of the Planet Gong. Lots of bands lost their tribal rhythmic sounds as they evolved, Gong, Hawkwind, even Floyd. Record company pressure maybe, you must change your sound and move with the times. Here we are back at the start again with new bands trying to do what has been done before. I've seen that trip before...Gong Est Mort, Vive La Gong!!!

I have this copy with the plastic labels. I found it in 1990 from the collection of a friend and I would certainly place it sometime in the mid to late 1970s. -

the remark on the printer and the repressing is preposterous and has no historical value, as far as I know. Prove me wrong! -

Edited 12 years agoContinental Circus was a film soundtrack done by Gong. Apparently it was recorded before Camembert Electrique, but released after. This album seemed to have fallen through the cracks, which is really too bad, this is great stuff. It has that same Gong sound, except Daevid Allen isn't singing about Pot Head Pixies, but about a motorcycle racer, which is the subject of the movie. All the Gong elements are here: quirky vocals from Daevid Allen, glissando guitar, jazzy arrangements, including sax from Didier Malherbe.
"What Do You Want?" is essentially "Fohat Digs Holes in Space", but with a different set of lyrics and a slightly slower pace. To me, the album doesn't deserve to be so ignored. I really think it's as much of an album as Camembert Electrique, or the Radio Gnome trilogy, and so on. If you prefer the psychedelic, Daevid Allen-led Gong, your collection isn't complete without this album.
