The CD layer is definitely the pick here. Loud enough to be punchy, yet dynamic enough not to have no clipping.
Comparing the wave forms of the CD layer to the 1996 original is night and day.
The 1996 is brick walled and clips, whereas this fits perfectly between the lines.
Comparing the CD layer wave forms to the SACD layer is different.
The SACD layer is much too quiet and leaves too much headroom.
You will be reaching for the volume control way too much, however dynamic range remains the same between the layers just at different volumes levels. -
Edited 2 years agoSteve Hoffman's remaster is definitely more dynamic and the instrument separation is greater and the more you turn it up it does sparkle with dynamic range. Not as good as AF's remaster of the s/t but it is more open on the high end than the original CD.

What you get with this, and Audio Fidelity’s RATM release, is a more pleasant experience. Put headphones on and crank the original. It’s kinda harsh and your ears may be mad at you. I can crank these without a problem.

It's a good remaster. The difference is not night and day from the original CD, it's a little less bright and a little more dynamic but very good overall. A few parts here and there sound pretty huge as a result and it's a welcomed improvement. Just keep in mind, the changes are relatively subtle.

Rage Against the Machine, Evil Empire... Will we get The Battle of Los Angeles reissue someday? It has a couple good tracks, too ;)

This SACD failed to live up to my expectations. Average-good at best, prefer my LP copy and the original CD is about as good as this SACD.
