Ha, I used to hate love songs. When this album first dropped, I avoided it like the plague just because I was prejudiced to the title. So much can change in the span of a couple of years - now that I actually lost divine love (intuition baby), one of the only good things that has come out of this situation is that I have gained a newfound appreciation for artistry focused on marital relationships, for lack of a better term.
"The Divine Feminine" is the soundtrack to pleading for a(nother) chance with a divine love. From the first eye-lock, consumation, arguement, to the break up, to hopeful perseverance - it's all there in the span of 10 tracks.
"Cinderella" is by far my favorite, since not only was my divine love the "cinderella" of her family, but the song is an epic with a great beat flip, the best bars from Mac on this album, and Ty's vocals rawer than the usual auto-tune B.S. he gets on. I'm not the one g his checks, but I think he should try that vocal style more often.
"Congratulations" is a great opener, Paak keeps it sparse but delivers an irreplacable hook on "Dang!", "Soulmate" is another winner in the R&B collabo category with Goodie Mob legend Cee-Lo, while "We" serves as the best solo-cut. Kendrick on "God Is Fair" is just what this album needed to close it off as surprising as the outro with Mac's mom. As for "My Favorite Part", I stil dont know how Mac had the strength enough to do that song, but you can tell by the title.
If "GO:OD A.M." is the bachelor life and "Swimming" is the transition period of a relationship ,
then "The Divine Feminine" is the innocence of the relationship when god realized He was not alone.
I know a lot of people like to poke their noses up at the majors, but this is a classic trilogy under Warner Records in the modern era of hip-hop where jazz is looked at by the uninitiated as old soft noise. If "The Divine Feminine" serves as Part 2, then Mac just never heard of a sequel slump is. -
