Ever since I first discovered them with “Blackwater Park”, Opeth has been among my top 5 favourite contemporary bands.
And although I love their death metal side, I wasn’t that shocked or disappointed when they decided to get rid of it and go fully classic prog with 2011’s “Heritage”, as I always thought that the writing had been on the wall for a while and it was just a matter of time that they would have moved in that direction.
It is true that I thought (still do) that “Heritage” was a somewhat underwhelming effort when compared with the previous band’s output, but I also thought that was because it was the typical “transitional album”, and great music would be waiting for us once the band would settle down on their new sound.
Time proved me right in 2014 when “Pale Communion” was released and again in 2016 with “Sorceress”. And while it’s true that I think that the former is the best album of the “death-less” Opeth for the time being, it’s equally true that I love the latter.
From the gorgeous intro “Persephone” to the closer slight return of the same title, “Sorceress” successfully moves from the pastoral (“Will O The Wisp”, “Sorceress 2”) to the classic heavy prog with a strong 70s feeling in the title song, “Chrysalis”, “The Wilde Flowers” or “Era”, even frolicking with a little exoticism on the eastern- flavoured “The Seventh Sojourn”, always consistently throwing in great ideas to a mix that is truly coherent and convincing, while Mikael Åkerfeldt once again shows the truly great vocalist he is, owner of a colourful voice even when restrained to his “clean” , that fits this kind of classic-inspired prog just fine.
Even the bonus tracks are interesting, including some great live renditions of songs from past albums like Pale Communion’s “Cusp Of Eternity”, which sounds bloody powerful and eerie with that vocal choir!
All things considered, “Sorceress” confirmed again that Opeth didn’t need the death metal to offer truly solid, interesting and well-thought music to anyone that is interested in classic progrock.
