My copy doesn’t have any issue with the pressing. The vinyl is very quiet and it sounds amazing. Much better than the canadian pressing and lightyears from the mondo double LP.

Edited 2 years agoLater editions made such a big deal about "Jerry Goldsmith's ORIGINAL unused music you didn't hear!" that it's a little funny to realize that the initial 1979 LP release already DID use Goldsmith's unused cues. If anything, the revised/substitute music in the actual movie has been underrepresented in soundtrack album form.
It's all good, though, because while Ridley Scott was right to opt for a quieter and more consistently creepy tone in the movie, Goldsmith's original grander, more melodic material makes for a more listenable album experience (while still recognizable enough as "the music from Alien"). One of my favorite moments is in "The Droid" where the horns and low strings repeat in this rhythmic pattern that's both chilling and catchy, I wish it lasted longer. Various cues are edited together in suites that sometimes barely match their titles but it all flows well enough that I don't mind.
I ripped a backup copy that adds the film version of "Main Title" as well as the Charles Gerhardt rendition of Hanson's "Symphony No. 2 (Romantic)" (used in the film's closing credits) and it's pretty much my perfect personal 'ALIEN' album.
(Confession: I also added Nostromo's pop cover single of the main theme as a bonus track...) -
Edited 6 years agoComplaining about surface noise from a vinyl pressing? Buy a cd problem solved!
One of many favorite soundtracks from Goldsmith this one in particular the opening sequence for the movie is minimalist and brooding and conveys that airless void and uncertainty that awaits the crew of the Nostromo. A classic in JG catalog!
