Edited one year agoAfter introducing "Philadelphia" to "Billy Paul" with his Live "LP", "Feelin' Good At The Cadillac Club", "Kenny Gamble" and "Leon Huff", brought this man back into the studio to record his second album, "Ebony Woman"....
Under the "Gamble & Huff" label, "Neptune Records" (by way of "Chess Records"), this time more than just "Philly" got to experience the Vocal stylings of "Mr. Paul".....
Starting with the 1st Crown Jewel "Title Track", we find "Billy" just swooning this Beautiful Black Woman anthem, behind some outstanding Orchestrations (which would be the blueprint to the "Philadelphia International Records" house Band "MSFB")....
The other Crown Jewels of this album are, "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "Let's Fall In Love All Over" and "Traces", all showing not only "Billy's" Jazzy style, but the versatility of his Vocal range....
Unfortunately though, there is extreme filler....
His versions of "Simon & Garfunkle's" "Mrs. Robinson", "Sly & the Family Stone's" "Everyday People", and "Creedence Clearwater Revival's" "Proud Mary", are less to be desired (plus later "Ike & Tina Turner" would turn "Proud Mary" out!!!!!!)
"Windy" and "Psychedelic Sally" are not bad, but they are just extra filler to me....
Even with all that, this album is still nice to have....More importantly it continued to lay a foundation on what was to come....
PS: I have the 1973 "Philadelphia International Records" version, with a young "Grace Jones" on the cover...Honestly though, I wish I had this version too!!!!! Just greedy as usual!!!!!
