During the transition from old to new millennium, heavy metal was flatted by nu metal music. Every different kind of heavy sounds appeared old-fashioned and nostalgic, and fell into the oblivion. Andy Sneap production contributed to make Dead Heart in a Dead World a milestone of heavy metal evolution into a more modern direction. Glacial and mechanic sounds encounter Nevermore melodic sensibility: the result is dark and futuristic as much as the dramatic lyrics by Warrel Dane are. Gothic atmospheres and psychedelic acidity are not so evident as in the previous albums of the Seattle band: indeed they are subtended, enriching epic power of the melodies (Jeff Loomis compositional creativity is at its best). Nevermore sonic exploration leaded heavy metal into the new millennium, with a combination of ancient and modern attitudes and styles.
