Edited 5 years agoMegaptera is one of my all-time favorite "evil ambient" bands of the 90s. Beyond the Massive Darkness is a splendid 2CD release which includes Megaptera's first LP, Songs from the Massive Darkness, as well as their follow-up CD Beyond the Shadow. Beyond the Shadow was my first introduction to the mad world of Megaptera. In the early-to-mid 90s when I lived outside of Philly a friend who worked at my favorite underground record shop/cd shop recommended I pick up two "great" new CDs: 1) Megaptera-Beyond the Shadow and 2) Brighter Death Now-Great Death 1 & 2. WHOA!!! I was ill prepared for the literal heavy-hitting power of both of these brutal offerings. I still own both of these CDs to this day and they receive regular rotation on my system. The remastering of both Megaptera offerings is fantastic! I had never heard Songs from the Massive Darkness and am happy to report that it is an awesome freshman effort from Megaptera. I own every one of Megaptera's works and absoutely LOVE the power electronics and deathlike ambience of each and every one of their releases. Without a doubt, Beyond the Shadow stands as one of the finest evil ambient releases "ever." It is really sad that Megaptera no longer exist. The good news is that they may be gone but are certainly not forgotten. Megaptera's music lives on thanks to incredible output during their short life as a band.
