Röyksopp’s debut, MELODY A.M., more or less keeps the promise of its title. Full of jaunty melodies and mid-tempo beats, it’s like a double-barreled blast of joyousness right into your brain. “Eple,” for instance, is wonderfully perky, as the beats and melodies seem to chase after one another, and, for full-on grooves, “Röyksopp’s Night Out” has a reverberating beat to match the dramatic strings and funk bass. Erlend Oye lends his vocals to “Poor Leno,” which, despite the house rhythm, manages to sound a little sad, and the sweetly tender “Remind Me.” Anneli Drecker, formerly of Bel Canto, provides vocals for the slow and sensuous “Sparks.” There’s hardly a misstep on this album, the saxophone that kicks off “She’s So” might sound too suspiciously like the soundtrack for an ‘80s erotic thriller, but the track quickly resolves itself into a woozy romance. An excellent album, through and through.
