I am rating this 5/5 a masterpiece IMO. PG is at the top of his game here, which is saying something. I’m going to rate the sound quality of this pressing though a 3/5 with hearing what others have expressed concerning the sibilance being rough. Especially on side A. I may end up picking up a new reissue print asap.

Album gets a default 5/5 cause for me the music is perfect. This album may be on my Mount Rushmore of perfect albums.

As for the quality of the record itself, I’d mirror what everyone else has said. This is one hot record but I find the sound stage to be excellent. Bass is very prominent and impressive. I don’t always get sibilance on the “s” sounds and when I do I’d say it’s mild to moderate. I’m using a Stanton 681EEE but the needle itself is aftermarket, so I’m not exactly sure what my specs are beyond the cartridge.

Scored this for 7 bucks, can’t beat that.

This is how in my opinion that the album could have been made: Side 1: Red Rain, Sledgehammer, Don't Give Up, Don't Break This Rhythm. Side 2: In Your Eyes, Mercy Street, Big Time, That Voice Again. The cd can have the bonus tracks of We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37) and This Is The Picture (Excellent Birds). We Do What We're Told is the b-side to BigTime and the later one could have been the b-side to Sledgehammer.

Sure, it's a little hot, but it's under the line of sibilance, but if you have a nicer stylus/cart and set it up properly, it should be within tolerable levels. I recommend a shibata or microline stylus which can cover more surface area. Cheaper styli will likely produce sibilance., especially with a well played record. I lucked out and got one in the shrink like new and cleaned the heck out of it before playing. Nice copies are still out there for not a lot of money! Runouts: GHS-24088-A-SR-3 Artisan logo GF, GHS-24088-BSR-1 Artisan logo (drum).

Playing back on a Rega P8 with a Hana Umami Blue and I'm not getting a significant amount of sibilance on Sledgehammer. The S's are a bit sharp but I've heard far worse (Billy Joel Tell Her About it, OG, Joe Jackson You Can't Get What You Want OG, Springsteen Darkness on the Edge of Town 2014 remaster). It is a little clinical sounding on vinyl, not warm at all. But it is clear and crisp, especially Don't Give Up. My copy is pressed on translucent Quiex vinyl.

I have the Specialty Pressing I bought when it first came out. The sibilance is the result of how they liked to equalize stuff in the eighties to cut through on the radio. Otherwise, it's a great-sounding album.

Sounds beyond perfect on a Linn. A reference album for sure.

Got this back in May 2021. Ortofon 2M Blue tracked well and only had mild sibilance in spots. Overall big sound, yes a bit bright on some tracks, but overall a great sounding album.

I'm not even sure how this ended up on my shelf but I cleaned it and played and wow what a treat. Sounds is really good and while I know most of the songs I kind of dismissed this album as I was never that much of a fan of the smash hit and other hit on this album. It's all the other songs that are worth staying for. PG was at his peak power with this album for sure just about the coolest guy on the planet and this point in time.
